Systems Engineering, E/E Systems and Thermal Management Systems

The individual combination and connectivity of in-vehicle systems offers massive potential for providing vehicle users with tangible added value. Doing so can help a vehicle manufacturer to set itself apart from competitors. The solutions that arise from this process – some of which are highly complex – require a general technical view on the one hand, and a clear idea of the manufacturer’s philosophy and the vehicle’s desired image on the other. Identifying and involving all relevant stakeholders is also necessary, not to mention creating an unambiguous description of the use cases, features, and drivers of the project, in order to establish a solid foundation on which to base the solutions. Clearly structuring the project into readily comprehensible requirements across all levels is what creates a stable framework for developing the corresponding systems and being able to efficiently and holistically evaluate the impact of any requested changes.

Systems Engineering

We use our technical expertise accumulated over 20 years of experience to support our customers by bringing together two fundamental disciplines: technology and methodology.

Systems Engineering

Technological discipline

Dream Workshop
  • Content-related knowledge and its application in requirements-based development processes in concept and series production development for the definition of systems, vehicle infrastructures and components
  • Systems definition (powertrain, E/E architecture, EMC – electromagnetic compatibility, functional safety, cybersecurity)
  • Vehicle infrastructure (communications and bus systems, vehicle electrical systems, thermal management system), component definition, etc.

Methodological discipline

  • Specification, application, and consultation with regard to
    an organized procedure
  • Structuring, documentation, and tooling for the management of requirements, development, and changes

In such cases, the top-down and bottom-up requirements are merged on the system level. However, this does not change anything with regard to the aim of showing interdependencies transparently. The consistent documentation in the requirements database facilitates seamless access to the traditional business fields or fields of activity of Bosch Engineering GmbH based on readily comprehensible, well-founded specifications and requirements.

Our methodology

Requirement Translation

The requirements of stakeholders serve as a basis for translation into unambiguous, testable requirements on the respective levels of abstraction. The requirements and dimensioning of the system in development are defined iteratively through an interdisciplinary combination of expertise, model-based systems development, the use of simulations for the overall system, and also by incorporating results from investigations into proofs of concept. To ensure proper manageability of the complexity and interdependencies between requirements, all results are documented and cross-linked in a requirements database.

Structuring of requirements

The methodology’s requirements levels are listed below for the sake of clarity:

  • Stakeholder level + use cases
  • Ecosystem level
  • Vehicle level
  • Vehicle systems level
  • Component system level
  • Component level

Access at any time

It is possible to access the process at any time during development. We support you along the way, from the initial idea to the concept phase and series production development – even right through the whole lifecycle. During the course of this, it is possible to focus on the ecosystem level, vehicle level, or subsystem level as required by each project. Few developments follow the theoretical “top-down” approach. Typically, there are already predefined “bottom-up” requirements that arise from existing platforms or predefined components.

E/E systems

More and more stringent requirements for electrical and electronic systems (E/E systems) necessitate mature, interdisciplinary competencies in order to be able to develop reliable solutions. It is not only the number of electric loads and components to be interconnected that contribute to this. The demand for redundant, failure-proof systems in particular needs to be satisfied. In addition to safeguarding availability and safety, E/E systems have a considerable influence on the efficient utilization and distribution of energy throughout the entire vehicle. Accordingly, they have the potential to increase a vehicle’s range while reducing emissions. Furthermore, E/E systems serve as a foundation for innovative additional functions such as remote diagnosis, over-the-air software updates, and the connectivity between vehicles and superordinate systems. This makes them enablers for a user experience (UX) that goes far beyond simply using a vehicle.

Early project phases

Our development services already help you to identify solutions during the very early project phases. This is enabled by trend reports and customized, simulation-aided concepts. Investigations into the feasibility and effectiveness of concepts can be supported by planning and building demonstrator and prototype vehicles, and by testing their capabilities on our in-house test benches and dynamometers, and in our laboratories.

Development solutions

It is absolutely necessary to involve multiple disciplines in order to be able to define an electrical/electronic vehicle infrastructure specifically for your needs as a customer. The requirements-based development and definition of the overarching E/E architecture is accordingly conducted with the involvement of experts from the following areas:

  • Communications systems
  • Vehicle electrical systems
  • Electrical-energy management (EEM)
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
  • Wiring-harness development and design
  • Integration (electrical/mechanical)

The involvement and integration of the disciplines “cyber security” and “functional safety” complement the technical disciplines to form a cohesive overall concept.

Solutions for series development

Development services for series development applications also cover matters related to coordination alongside combining technical aspects. In this sense, we support you during the planning and content-related definition of the individual integration steps, in addition to their application and implementation within the project. This enables developments for series to be guided and supported by us from the initial vision to the concept creation, studies, proofs of concept, right through to attaining readiness for production.

Thermal management systems

Heating and cooling systems in overarching vehicle systems are becoming increasingly vital. Consequently, the focus in development is more and more on the efficient discharge of combustion engines’ thermal output, safeguarding thermal stability in all operating points and states, and particularly on the conditioning of the electric powertrain system and the vehicle cabin. Particularly in vehicles with an electric powertrain, performance and efficiency – and therefore vehicle range – depend heavily on the thermal conditioning of components and the smart utilization of available energy.

Development solutions

The definition and dimensioning of heating and cooling systems in combination with the appropriate, requirements-based control strategies are covered by the scope of our development services. Individual components are dimensioned using system simulation in order to be able to transparently evaluate the impact on performance, efficiency, comfort, and convenience.
